Your Tax ID is a piece of information that must remain safe and secure at all times, whether this is a personal or company number. Unfortunately, accidents do happen. If you have accidentally misplaced your Federal Tax ID number or your company’s IRS EIN number, here are a few things that you can do:
Check Old Documents: If you are looking for an individual Tax ID, it will match the number of your individual Tax ID, or ITIN and should have that number on the forms. If you are a US citizen, or permanent resident, and you did not obtain your ID online, you should check your social security card for the number instead. For a company, the Employer Identification number, or EIN can appear on paperwork for the company, or old bank statements.
Dig Out Old Tax Returns: Old tax paperwork will certainly have your, or your company’s Tax ID number. Whether you keep a paper or digital copy of your returns, it is always a good idea to go back and double check. You also have the option of contacting your tax accountant, who would have had your Tax ID number in order to prepare your taxes from previous years.
Go Back Online: In many cases, you can look up your Tax ID online. Just go to the website where you initially received the number and submit a request for a duplicate. If you cannot recall the original website, you may be able to retrieve your number through another trusted site as long as you are able to verify your information.
While losing your Tax ID is not ideal, there are definitely easy ways to get back that important number with minimal hassle so that you can get on with tax season.
