You may have heard a lot about Technorati Tags but before we jump in to how to use them, it's important for you to first know what they are.
Technorati is an Internet search engine that focuses mainly on tracking, ranking and searching blogs. Technorati Tags are quite simply labels that you can attach to your blog post to assist with the search process.
For example, a blog about kitchen design might have the tag, kitchen design or kitchen remodeling. Tagging your blog makes it easy for people to find it whether they use a Technorati search tool or not. Technorati tagged blogs often rank higher on Google and other searches too.
So how do you use a Technorati Tag?
* The good new is that if you already use blogging software that supports categories and RSS/Atom feeds then all you have to do is use your included category system. Movable Type, WordPress, TypePad, Blogware and Radio all support categories as do many others. Technorati will pick your categories up automatically. You're tagged and good to go.
* If you are using a blogging software that supports categories then make sure you are publishing RSS/Atom feeds and your categories will be read as tags.
* If your blogging software doesn't support categories then all hope is not lost. All you have to do is tag your post with a special link placed right in the body of your post. Here's what it will look like for the tag kitchen design:
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/kitchen + design" rel="tag">kitchen design</a>
or
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/remodeling" rel="tag">remodeling</a>
Note that two word tags must have a + between the words.
* The really great part is that your tag can be anything. It doesn't have to fit into a predefined category. The other thing to note here is that you don't have to link to Technorati for your post to show up on their pages. The important aspect of the code is the rel="tag">remodeling</a>.
For example, if you want to link to your own webpage then your link would look like this:
<a href="http://yourwebsitehere.com/remodeling" rel="tag">remodeling</a>
Now if you don't want a link to be seen on your post then all you have to do is remove the viewable link portion. The Technorati spiders, those little computer programs that search the web for content, will still see the tag. Here's what an invisible tag looks like:
<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/remodeling" rel="tag"></a>
If you currently have a blog, take advantage of this fantastic technology. Tagging is a quick and simple way to make sure your blog has a wider reach, which results in more traffic, more customers and more profits.
